Mark Turgeon Â
Opening Statement:
"I was really proud of our guys, especially the first half I thought we were terrific. Â That's a pretty good team that's played two good teams tough. Being up 49-25 at the half was good. I liked the way we finished the half. Bruno [Fernando] had probably his best half since he's been here. Against the zone he didn't let it bother him, I thought we executed well to get Bruno some shots near the basket. He was tremendous on defense. We did a lot of great things in that first half. Second half we weren't mentally tough enough I don't think to sustain it, but I did play a lot of people just to try to get more minutes, get guys more comfortable out there. Bruno got in foul trouble and we weren't quite as good defensively, so we've got to learn how to be good defensively when Bruno's not out there. Made some shots, made 10 [threes], had four or five wide open ones that rimmed out a little bit that probably could've gone down for us, then you'd be talking about what a great shooting night it was. But it's a step in the right direction. This is the best we've played in our first three games so we're heading the right way."
On how important ball movement is for this team:
"Yeah, well we're a good passing team. It starts with Anthony [Cowan Jr.] and Eric [Ayala]. They do a great job with it. Obviously we've seen a lot of zone. They're a pretty good man team, they played one possession of man all night. We've gotten better. We shared it - 24 assists on 31 baskets is a great night for us. We preach it. We did a lot of different things against the zone. We ran two or three different zone offenses, we ran our man plays against it, and we really shared it and we got a lot of really good looks against their zone so it was great to see."
On how the inside play got the offense going:
"Well I just think that our big guys didn't sit there and say, 'Alright, they're zoning us, we're not going to have a good night.' Bruno's energy was terrific. I told him to get every rebound if he could on offense and he tried. And then we ran some good stuff to get him, or we executed well to get him the ball close to the basket. It was good to see. He was really good. You want to be well-rounded as an offense, I think we have that type of team that we can score inside, score in the paint. But what we haven't done - and we shot a lot of threes tonight, that's what they were giving us - we haven't settled. When we've struggled, we've figured out ways to score, whether it's getting to the foul line or getting to the rim. Guys are figuring it out, continuing to get better. We just keep growing but I want to be complete, I think then we're going to be pretty darn good."
Â
On how much more assertive Darryl Morsell is this season:
"Well, I think from the end of your freshman year to the end of your sophomore year is when you kind of improve the most. Because you really don't know what you're getting into your freshman year, then you know what's going to happen. Darryl in the second half was terrific. Got out on the break, made some good plays. It was probably his best half of the year. He was pretty good against Navy in the second half. We were able to go small for a little bit with Darryl at the four, it was good. He hit the three in the corner when he was in at the three. It was his best half, which is good to see. Whether he's been more serious, I just think he understands more. He knows what lies ahead so he knows how important these games are - games that we're supposed to win but that we keep getting better and I think our leaders are doing a good job of letting the young guys know that we have to keep improving during the stretch."
On the play of Aaron Wiggins:
"Yeah [
Aaron Wiggins] was better. And he was 4-8 from three. Defensively he continues to grow. Aaron [Wiggins] can do that, and he can get hot. He was good. A couple of his turnovers I didn't like - decision making - of course I'm going to be critical. He made the same mistake in the second half that he made on a turnover, he did it again the next time, but he didn't turn it over. He has to learn from that, but he made shots. He got comfortable and he didn't hesitate which was good to see."
On Aaron Wiggins, Serrell Smith Jr. and Ricky Lindo Jr coming off the bench:
"I don't know what I am going to do with the starting lineup. I imagine that Bruno [Fernando] and Anthony [Cowan Jr.] are going to be in it. I always try different things. Darryl [Morsell] responded to not starting the last game so I put him back in there tonight. I think Aaron [Wiggins] is more comfortable coming off the bench to be quite honest with you. Ricky [Lindo Jr.] had his best game since he's been here we've seen that in practice. He's very long, he really rebounded well. He affected shots by the rim and he made some really good passes. Serrell [Smith Jr.] is still finding himself. He made a few shots tonight but he's not playing the way that he's capable of playing. He knows that, but I did play him almost 17 minutes, so he can get more comfortable and hopefully each time he gets to play better for us because we need him. We need Serrell [Smith] to play well as the season goes on."
On similarities of how Aaron [Wiggins] approaches the game like Kevin [Heurter]:
"I think Aaron [Wiggins] is a really good player and that's why we recruited the heck out of him. Nothing he's doing really surprises me, except maybe he's a little bit further along defensively then I was expecting. He did a nice job on the break tonight, pitching the ball ahead, getting the ball to the right people. I thought we ran better tonight then we've run. We practiced that in our exhibition game and our private scrimmage, but we haven't done it since. Tonight, we ran—we weren't as efficient as I wanted to be, but we really ran. And I think if we can guard like I think we can guard, we can run. Aaron [Wiggins] doesn't get sped up and he has a good feel. He's learning, he cares. He wants to be great so he's always trying to improve."
On Bruno Fernando fouls in beginning of second half:
"No, I thought it was bad luck. The second one they have to call it. When you're inside the arc and you don't jump it's an automatic foul. Bruno [Fernando] would've jumped. Start of the second I wasn't thrilled with a lot of aspects, but I won't get into it. It's disappointing for Bruno [Fernando] because he was really on his way to a monster game. Could've been 15 or 16 rebounds and 20 something points against the zone. I was disappointed for him."
Freshman Guard Aaron Wiggins
On three-point shooting percentage:
"That's definitely something I've worked on, me and my teammates. We get shots up every day, and so that is something I am capable of doing, just hitting shots. First two games I wasn't shooting at my best but tonight was a pretty decent night, four for 8 from the three-point field. So I guess I shot pretty well."
Â
On reassurance as a team on three-point percentage improvement:
"Oh for sure, I mean first game I think we shot two for nineteen from the three-point line. At Navy we shot a little better, we hit a couple more shots. Coming in tonight I'm not sure how many three's we hit total I think we hit ten for thirty which is thirty-three percent. That's pretty good just getting shots up, we have to continue to keep getting a little bit better. There were a couple of shots that went in and out, shots that should have fallen but I think if we continue to shoot it will start to add up and it will come together towards the end."
Â
Freshman Forward Ricky Lindo Jr.
On gaining experience while minimizing mistakes as a freshman:
"We just talk in the huddles and make sure we know what are doing. Coach tells us in the huddle what we are supposed to do, so we just have to make sure we pay attention and know our role. Coach Turgeon tells us that every practice, to know our role and do our part to help the team be successful. Â Â
Â
On motivation to get more time on the court:
"I have to just keep playing hard and do what I need to do. Eventually, If I crack the starting lineup, I'll just keep playing hard. Can't just settle, and just be ready when coach calls my name."
