COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior right hander Taylor Bloom threw six consecutive scoreless innings against the Northwestern (8-12, 1-3 Big Ten), but the Maryland baseball team (12-14, 0-1 Big Ten) could not overcome a tough second inning and dropped game one of a three game set 4-0 at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Friday night.

Bloom finished his outing having given up just three runs over eight innings, but Maryland's offense was unable to get anything against Wildcat hurler Quinn Lavelle. The left-hander tossed a complete game shutout.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in second, plating three in the inning. Bloom was able to get the Terps out of the inning with a pop out to shortstop AJ Lee, limiting what could have been a bigger inning. .

Bloom recovered from the second and ended his day with eight innings, five hits, four strikeouts, and three runs. Redshirt Freshman Mike Vasturia pitched one inning in relief and gave up a run.

Lee went 2-for-3, leading off the second and fifth inning with singles. Senior Zach Jancarski recorded a single to lead off the Terps in eighth. Junior Nick Dunn notched down a single in the ninth inning. Lavelle kept the runners there as no Maryland runner advanced past first base on the night.

In the seventh inning, first baseman Kevin Biondic and Dunn helped keep the score within reach for Maryland. Biondic snagged a hard-hit grounder for the force out at first. On the next play, Dunn threw out the runner at home to keep the lead at three. The Terps defense was fairly solid throughout, with junior Marty Costes gunning down a pair of runners.

Maryland will be back at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against the Wildcats. Fans can follow the action live on BTN Plus or the Maryland Baseball Network.
