Rams Take Down Terps

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Marty Costes and freshman Randy Bednar both hit home runs, but Maryland fell to VCU 14-3 at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

The Terrapins (16-20) fell behind in the first and could not come back as VCU scored in the first five frames to take a commanding lead. Bednar and Costes both had multi-hit games.

Maryland starter Alec Tuohy looked sharp in the first, but an error by shortstop AJ Lee extended the VCU inning and allowed the Rams to score. VCU then got to Tuohy for three runs in the second.

Bednar cut the Rams lead to 4-2 in the bottom half to the second, slamming his fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot. After two more VCU runs in the third, Costes hit his third home run of the year to make it 6-3.

VCU scored eight unanswered runs to end the game.

Maryland returns to action Friday night against Purdue. Action is set to begin at 6:30.
