EAST LANSING, Mich. – Junior Marty Costes hit a fifth inning grand slam to lift the Maryland baseball team past Michigan State, 5-3, at McLane Baseball Stadium Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Terrapins (19-24, 5-9 Big Ten) won their first series since the end of March and advanced up the Big Ten standings. Sophomore lefty Tyler Blohm tossed six innings, scattered three hits and gave up just one run.

Michigan State took the lead in the first and the Terps' offense failed to get going until the fifth. Freshman Randy Bednar and senior Justin Morris hit back-to-back singles with one out. After AJ Lee stuck out, Nick Dunn drew a four-pitch walk to bring up Costes. The junior rocketed a 1-0 pitch over the scoreboard in left field to give Maryland a 4-1 lead.

Blohm worked out of multiple jams, including in the bottom half of the fifth when Costes made a diving catch in the cap with the bases loaded to end the inning. Senior right-hander Taylor Bloom took over for Blohm in the seventh and tossed a pair of inning, allowing two runs in the eighth.

In the top half of the eighth, the Teprs grabbed an insurance run on a Taylor Wright RBI double in the gap that scored Zach Jancarski from first.

In the ninth, an error allowed the lead-off runner to reach on right-hander John Murphy. The junior then induced a ground ball out and a fly out before getting Justin Antoncic to foul out after a 14-pitch at bat.

Maryland returns to action Tuesday at West Virginia. The Terps and Mountaineers will face off at 6:30 p.m. and fans can follow the action on the Maryland Baseball Network.
