LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Former Terrapin Jake Layman will suit up for the Portland Trailblazers Tuesday evening as his team takes on the Los Angeles Lakes in the NBA Summer League Final in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Layman has helped lead the Trailblazers to a 6-0 record in the Sumer League this month, averaging 14 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals while shooting 55% from the field. Layman, a two-time All-Big Ten selection during his career in College Park, had his third year option picked up by Portland after a period of uncertainty heading into NBA Summer League competition.
"I was out in Portland working out, my mindset was I'm going to workout with the team, work my butt off and show them that if they pick (the option) up, I'm ready to play," Layman told Trailblazers.com on July 8. "But if not, I'll be ready to go somewhere else and do the same thing. I was so happy when they picked it up, definitely nervous during that time period."
The 2016 UMD graduate has delivered for Portland throughout its six-game unbeaten stretch, posting several explosive plays while bringing poise and confidence to the lineup for the Trailblazers. Layman caught the league's attention in his team's 93-78 win over the Utah Jazz on July 7, throwing down a put-back dunk that checked in at No. 4 on SportCenter's Top 10 plays the following day.
Layman and the Trailblazers will tip off vs. the Lakers at 10:00 pm at the Thomas & Mack Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
