Fernando Earns B1G Honor; Terps Ranked 19th

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Bruno Fernando of the newly minted No. 19 Maryland men's basketball team has been named Big Ten Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the Big Ten Conference.
The Terrapins are back in the Associated Press rankings for the third week this season, and first since being ranked 23rd on Dec. 3. It also marks Maryland's first visit to the top-20 since being ranked 17th on Jan. 30, 2017.
The award is Fernando's first career conference Player of the Week honor. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice last season.
Fernando was sensational in a pair of critical Maryland victories last week, notching two double-doubles and averaging 17.5 points (73% FG), 12 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
Fernando opened the week posting 10 points and 11 rebounds in Maryland's 15-point road victory at Minnesota. He then followed that performance with a 25-point, 13-rebound effort against #22 Indiana. Fernando connected on 11-of-12 field goals in the win.
The Luanda, Angola native currently leads the Big Ten Conference in blocks/g (2.24) and field goal pct. (.685).
Fernando and the Terrapins return to action this evening when they welcome Wisconsin to College Park for an 8:30 pm tip on FS1.
