Terps Open Spring Slate At Navy

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's tennis team will begin its 2019 spring campaign on Sunday, traveling to Navy for an in-state battle at 1 p.m. The two sides will play at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis and fans can follow along via @TerpTennis on Twitter.
Maryland last featured in the Kitty Harrison Invitational during the fall season, with Anastasiia Gevel leading the way for the Terps. The sophomore posted a 3-0 record between doubles and singles play, while teammate Saya Usui finished the weekend with a 2-1 mark.
Navy enters the weekend with a 2-1 record, picking up a pair of 6-1 victories over St. Bonaventure and St. Francis last weekend. The Mids will play at Richmond on Saturday before hosting hte Terps for a Sunday matinee. Navy has been paced by earning the doubles point, as the Mids have captured the opening point of the match in each of their two victories.
Catalina Rico has been a steadying presence for Navy this season, as the senior is one victory away from 100 career wins at Navy. The senior captain currently holds a 55-39 record in doubles, while holding a 44-24 singles mark. Here 99 career wins currently rank eighth all-time in the program record books while her 55 doubles wins are sixth all time.
Maryland and Navy last met to begin the 2017 season, with the Terps taking the match by a score of 5-2. The Mids took the doubles point to kick things off, but the Terps raced back to take five-of-six singles matches en route to a victory. That victory was the beginning of Maryland's most successful season in program history, which featured a 16-6 overall record and a 7-4 conference record.

Top doubles pair of Eva Alexandrova and Millie Stretton became the fourth duo in the last three seasons to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Atlantic Regional, while Saya Usui was a runner-up at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational.
Maryland will look to continue its doubles play success this season, and will be led by its returning top tandem of Eva Alexandrova and Millie Stretton. The two impressed in the 2018 season, capping off the year with an upset at the Big Ten Tournament over fourth-ranked Lipp/Larner of Northwestern. The win was their team-best 16th of the season.
All eight players on Maryland's roster are returning from its 2017-18 squad. Every member of the squad will come into the season with experience playing in Maryland's singles lineup. The Terps will be guided by its two seniors, Arnelle Sullivan and Millie Stretton. Sullivan is entering her fourth year in College Park, while Stretton will participate in her second season as a Terp after transferring from Kansas following the 2016-17 season.
Maryland will open up its home schedule on Thursday, Jan. 31, taking on Georgetown in a 3 p.m. showdown. The match will take place at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park.
