
Charles, Mikesell Earn Big Ten Weekly Honors

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Taylor Mikesell and junior Kaila Charles of the 10th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (18-2, 7-2 B1G) earned Big Ten weekly honors Monday for their performances in the Terrapins' two road wins.
Mikesell earned her first Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor. Charles was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll for the fifth time in her career and her eighth career weekly honor.
In two road wins this week, Mikesell averaged 13.5 points, with 4.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists. In her homecoming game at Ohio State, she went 5-for-10 from the field with three three-pointers made. She made two jumpers, and drew the foul on one, as the Buckeyes tried to cut the lead in the third quarter. She finished with 14 points, three boards and seven assists in 36 minutes on the floor.
At Indiana Sunday, she hit a crucial three-pointer that put the Terps up four in the second quarter and they never looked back. She finished with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists in 37 minutes on the floor.
She has scored in double figures in 19 of 20 games this year and is playing more minutes than any rookie in the Big Ten. As a freshman, she is leading the team in minutes (34.3) and leads the league with 61 threes made.
Charles She averaged 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and shot over 60 percent from the field in the two victories on the week. In their matchup at Indiana, the Terrapins trailed by eight early in the matchup. Charles rattled off 12 straight points in the second quarter and jumpstarted a 19-3 run that helped the Terps take a 40-25 lead into halftime. She scored 19 of her season-high 25 points in the first half. She chipped in a season-high 11 boards. Charles went 12-19 from the floor with four assists and two steals.
At Ohio State, Charles and the Terrapins fought through foul trouble. She contributed six of her eight points in the second half run that sealed the game and went 4-for-4 at the line in the third quarter to keep the Terps' lead intact. Her jumper with 3:54 left in the third quarter put the Terrapins up by seven.
Next, the Terrapins will return home to College Park to host Wisconsin (11-10, 2-7) Thursday at 7 p.m. at the XFINITY Center.

Play4TheCure is a fundraising platform for the National Foundation for Cancer Research which provides funding worldwide to the best scientists to enable cutting edge research that other large cancer organizations can't and won't fund. Play4TheCure inspires young athletes and their teams to leverage their passion for sports to "Play4" loved ones affected by cancer and encourages them to actively participate in working to fund cancer research to make a difference.
Fans can donate with proceeds going to the National Foundation for Cancer Research here. Fans can show their donation receipt to the Terrapin Ticket Office on game day to receive a $4 discounted ticket to the game.
