ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Three Terps earned singles victories but the Maryland women's tennis team (0-1, 0-0 B1G) narrowly fell at Navy, 4-3, on Sunday.
Millie Stretton won in straight sets, while Anastasiia Gevel and Zoe Kulkarni took a pair of three-set wins to get the Terps a trio of points in the contest.
"Navy was exceptional today," head coach Daria Panova said. "They were gritty and competed very well. We put ourselves in some holes today that were hard to dig ourselves out of. We're going to learn from it and get better. We have a quick turnaround and a great opportunity again on Thursday against Georgetown."
Navy took the early lead in the match, capturing the doubles point for an early 1-0 lead. Maryland was able to get a win at the top doubles spot from Eva Alexandrova and Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka, but the Mids took the matches at second and third doubles to earn the early advantage.
Their momentum carried into singles play, with a pair of victories at second and fifth singles putting them within a point of victory. Stretton was then able to put the Terps on the board, winning 6-2, 6-4, at third singles to make it 3-1.
However, Navy clinched the match shortly after with a three-set triumph at first singles.
Maryland was able to pick up two additional wins following Navy's clinch, with Gevel and Kulkarni grinding out three-set wins at fourth and sixth singles respectively.
The Terps will be back in action on Thursday, hosting local foe Georgetown in a matinee at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park. Opening serve between the Terps and Hoyas is slated for 3 p.m.
