COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With less than 10 days away from the start of the 2019 season, the Maryland women's lacrosse team has selected seniors Julia Braig, Jen Giles and Megan Taylor as team captains for the upcoming season.
"Being named our captains by their teammates is a much deserved honor for Julia, Jenny and Megan," head coach Cathy Reese said. "They exemplify what being a Terp is about by their hard work, leadership and commitment both on and off the field. They have helped our program achieve great success in their first three years, and we're confident they'll be ready to lead the Terps this season."
This will be the second straight year that Braig and Giles will be captains for the Terps. Taylor, the three-time reigning Big Ten Goaltender of the Year joins her two fellow seniors as a captain on the 2019 team.
Braig returns as the defensive leader for the Terps. A 2018 IWLCA First Team All-American, the then-junior was also named the Big Ten Defender of the Year, an All-Big Ten honoree, an All-Big Ten Tournament team member and a IWLCA All-South Region First Team member, as well as being one of the 25 finalists for the Tewaaraton Award.
Also a 2018 IWLCA First Team All-American, Giles made an impact all over the field in her junior season, as she led the team in assists (31), was second in points (83) and groundballs (38), while ranking third in goals (52). The Ellicott City, Md. native was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team for the second year in a row as well as the All-Big Ten team. This January, Giles played with the US National Team at the Spring Premiere in California.
Taylor, the 2017 IWLCA National Goaltender of the Year, last year had a third straight strong season, posting 189 saves on a .477 percentage while leading the conference with a 9.94 goals against average. One of the premier goaltenders in the nation, Taylor was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team and a Tewaaraton top-25 finalist as well as being the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year. Taylor is a two-time IWLCA All-American.
The Terps open the season against George Mason at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium on Feb. 9 at 3:00 p.m.
