Terps Host Thursday Matinee

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's tennis team (0-1, 0-0 B1G) will open up its home schedule this week, taking on local foe Georgetown (1-2, 1-1 Big East) at the Junior Tennis Champions Center on Thursday afternoon.
Maryland opened its 2019 season with a tight loss to Navy. The Terps nearly fought back after dropping the doubles point, but ultimately fell to the Mids by a final score of 4-3.
The Terps saw wins from senior Millie Stretton, as well as sophomores Anastasiia Gevel and Zoe Kulkarni. Stretton was victorious in straight sets, while Gevel and Kulkarni were able to pull out a pair of three-set victories.
In doubles play, sophomore Eva Alexandrova and junior Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka teamed up to pick up a win at the first doubles spot, winning their contest by a score of 6-3.
Georgetown is 1-2 through the early portion of the spring schedule, with its lone triumph coming against conference foe Butler. The Hoyas bested the Bulldogs in their Big East opener by a score of 5-2. In its most recent outing, Georgetown dropped a match at DePaul, falling to the Blue Demons, 4-3.
Georgetown has been led in singles play by Sydney Goodsoon, who is perfect in three appearances this season. In doubles, the pair of Risa Nakagawa and Elena DeSantis have won both matches they've appeared in as a tandem.
Maryland found success in the fall campaign, participating in five events during the early season slate.
Top doubles pair of Eva Alexandrova and Millie Stretton became the fourth duo in the last three seasons to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Atlantic Regional.
Juniors Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka and Saya Usui were doubles champions at the Bedford Cup, while Usui also earned a runner-up finish at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational.
All eight players on Maryland's roster have at least one season of collegiate tennis under their belt. The roster also includes seven returners from the 2018 squad, with the lone addition being Kansas transfer Amber Policare.
The Terps will be guided by a pair of seniors: Arnelle Sullivan and Millie Stretton. Sullivan is entering her fourth season in College Park, while Stretton will compete in her second season as a Terrapin after transferring from Kansas State.
Then-freshmen Eva Alexandrova and Zoe Kulkarni had strong inaugural campaigns for the Terps last year.
Playing at the top spot in Maryland's doubles and singles lineups, Alexandrova's 11 singles and 16 doubles triumphs earned her All-Big Ten honors.
Kulkarni anchored Maryland's singles lineup, claiming 10 singles wins that included four in conference play.
The Terps were successful in the classroom last season, with three current members of the squad earning 2018 ITA All-Academic honors.
Eva Alexandrova, Millie Stretton and Saya Usui represented the Terrapins on the list, which includes student-athletes who are varsity letter-winners and have a GPA of at least a 3.5.
Maryland also earned the ITA All-Academic Team award, which goes to a program that has a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or above for the academic year.
Maryland will be back at the JTCC on Saturday, hosting George Washington at noon.
