Seven Terrapin Alums Named to U.S. Fall Classic Roster

SPARKS, Md. – Seven Maryland lacrosse alumni were named to the U.S. team set to compete in the 2019 Fall Classic held October 18-20 as announced this week.

Brian Phipps ('10), John Haus ('13), Michael Chanenchuk ('14) Matt Dunn ('16), Tim Muller ('17), Bryce Young ('18) and Connor Kelly ('18) were all named to the 27-man roster by head coach John Danowski. Maryland produced the most selections of any college or university, four more than the next highest school.

Phipps is fresh off a Major League Lacrosse title on October 6, as he made 19 saves across the semifinal and championship games to help lead the Bayhawks to their sixth MLL crown. Phipps remains one of the top goalies to don a Maryland uniform, ranking fifth in program history in saves (473) while earning All-American honors in 2010 as a senior.

The other six Terps also captured a professional title in 2019 with the Premier Lacrosse League's Whipsnakes, winning the newly founded league's' first ever title on September 21.

Muller, Dunn, and Young reunited to anchor the Whipsnakes defensive unit this year, boasting one of the PLL's most fearsome trios. All three earned USILA All-Americans during their Terrapin careers, while Muller was named the nation's most outstanding defenseman and NCAA Tournament MVP during Maryland's 2017 National Championship season.

Haus, Kelly and Chanenchuk were key pieces for the Whipsnakes midfield unit this season, headlined by Chanenchuk who was named to league's inaugural All-Pro team. Chanenchuk led the league in two-point goals this year, showcasing the rangy shooting ability he crafted at Maryland as a two-time All-American.

Kelly was also a two-time All-American and 2018 Tewaraton finalist as a Terp, finishing his career in the top-10 all-time at Maryland in points (191) and goals (128). Haus was a three-time All-American at UMD, and is one of six Fall Classic U.S. team members on the final 23-man roster that won gold at the World Lacrosse championship in the summer of 2018 in Netanya, Israel.

The U.S. men's team will open its competition on Friday, Oct. 18 against Canada, before facing reigning NCAA champion Virginia on Oct. 19. The U.S. wrap up the weekend with an exhibition game against Canada on Oct. 20 using the trial rules developed by World Lacrosse.
