FAIRFAX, Va. – Junior Danny Bertoni was Maryland's lone placer at the Patriot Open in Fairfax, Va. On Saturday. Bertoni went 3-1 on the day at 141 pounds, winning his first three bouts to clinch a spot in the third-place match.
The junior from Jefferson, Md. has now placed at the Southeast Open (5th), Wolfpack Open (2nd) and the Patriot Open (4th). Bertoni open up his day with a 3-2 decision over NC State's Alex Urquiza, then followed it up with a 12-0 major decision over Edinboro's Michael Cassidy and a 12-5 decision over Lock Haven's Tyler Dilley. Bertoni fell to Sal Profaci of American with a 12-1 major decision in the semifinals, then gave up the third-place bout to Army's Corey Shie with a medical forfeit.
Orion Anderson, Quinn Devaney, Garrett Burnham, Michael North, Jonathan Spadafora, and Niko Cappello also turned in two-win performances on the day.
Maryland will be back in action in dual competition on December 20 when the Terps host Pitt at the XFINITY Center Pavilion for the program's home opener. For full results from the Patriot Open, see below.
