Terps Fall to Campbell in Opener

CONWAY, S.C. – The Maryland baseball team opened up a 4-0 lead after three innings, but fell to Campbell, 10-6, in 10 innings in the opening game of the Brittain Resorts Invitational at Springs Brooks Stadium Friday morning.

The Terrapins (0-1) gave up the 4-0 lead and trailed 6-5 after eight before getting a run in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Campbell then plated three times in the 10th to secure the victory.

Senior Taylor Wright led the Terps with three hits and a run scored while sophomore Justin Vought had a home run and three RBIs. In his Maryland debut, junior Caleb Walls reached base four times and scored three times.

Maryland opened up the scoring in the first. Walls singled to lead-off the frame before eventually scoring after the Terps loaded the bases. Walls gave the Terps another run in the second with an opposite field solo home run to left.

The Terps made it a 4-0 advantage in the third when Vought unleashed a rocket over the fence in left to plate two.

Maryland starter Hunter Parsons was up-and-down in his first start of the season. Parsons got through the first three innings scoreless, but was lifted after five after giving up solo homers in the fourth and fifth.

Maryland answered the solo homer in the fifth when Wright singled in Bednar after the sophomore had doubled. Campbell came back with a run in the sixth before scoring three off Maryland relief pitching in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Walls scored the tying run after reaching on a walk and moving to second on a Bednar walk before advancing the rest of the way on a pair of wild pitches.

The Camels responded with four 10th-inning runs to take the victory.

The Terps return to action Saturday afternoon against No. 21 Coastal Carolina. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., at Springs Brooks Stadium and fans can watch the contest on goccusports.com or listen live on the Maryland Baseball Network
