PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Maryland gymnastics team posted their best score of the season (195.275) in the GymTerps first Big Ten victory. The Terps earned new season highs on vault (48.925) and floor (48.925).
"We needed this tonight," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "Coming out here, settling down and doing what we know we can do, this is what we needed. This is really just the starting point for this season."
Maryland started the meet on their strongest event of the season; bars. The Terps posted a 48.925 on the event with sophomore Audrey Barber leading the way with a 9.875 to match her season-best. Juniors Alecia Farina and Tiara Wright were both major contributors to the team score adding a 9.825 and 9.775, respectively.
"Today we really focused on taking it one skill at a time and one event at a time," said Farina. "We have so much potential to be great and today was our first chance to show that we are a good team."
Maryland earned their best vault score of the season led by Farina (9.850) to match her season-best. Three Terps posted 9.800 or higher on vault including Barber (9.825) and sophomore Collea Burgess (9.800).
Two competitors posted 9.800s or higher on floor including Barber (9.825) and senior Alex Robinson whose floor routine depute earned her a 9.800.
Barber won the all-around competition with a 39.225, her best of the season. She earned 9.825 on three of four events to hoist the Terps to a 195.275-194.600 victory.
"We are finally hitting our stride. This is the team that we thought we could be based on the way we practice and it's finally coming out in competition," said Nelligan.
