COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland baseball team will open its home schedule this weekend when it welcomes the Maine Black Bears to College Park for a three-game series. Storylines
- The all-time series between the two programs is knotted at 1-1. Maryland won the last meeting 9-0 in 1965. The Terps' last contest against a team in the American East came at the 2017 NCAA Regionals in Winston-Salem against UMBC. Maryland won that matchup 16-2.Â
- Sophomore outfielder Randy Bednar had the best weekend of his career to open the season. Bednar batted .400 with a .600 on-base percentage and drove in a team-high four runs. Â
- Newcomer Caleb Walls sparked the Terps throughout the weekend from the lead-off spot. The junior transfer from Pasco-Hernando State College hit .364 with a home run and four runs scored. His on-base percentage sits at .533.
- Maryland saw debuts from eight different pitchers in its opening weekend. The newcomers that came out of the bullpen combined to give up just one earned run over seven and two thirds innings of work.Â
- Senior third baseman Taylor Wright got off to a great start over the weekend, batting .364 with an on-base percentage of .462. Wright also drove in a pair of runs.Â
- Senior closer John Murphy made his debut on Sunday against VCU and shut the door over two innings of work to pick up his first save of the season. Murphy struck out three in his outing. Junior Nick Turnbull struck out two in his outing and earned his first career win.Â
- Senior right-hander Hunter Parsons will serve as Maryland's Friday ace after a breakout campaign as a junior. Parsons was solid in his first outing of the year, giving up two earned runs over five innings. He left the game with the Terps in the lead. Parsons, Murphy and AJ Lee were named Maryland's Big Ten Players to Watch.
