RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Gracie Voulgaris hit her first career home run and ended the day with 4 RBI, leading the Terps to a resilient 12-9 win over the Portland State Vikings, who beat the Terps in their first matchup Friday. The Terps now have back-to-back winning weekends nearing the one-month mark of the season.
Maryland was firing on all cylinders to start the game behind solid pitching from Sydney Golden and electric batting throughout the lineup. Golden sat down the first three batters she faced, then Taylor Okada hit her second leadoff triple in as many games. Brashear bat next and launched a towering sacrifice fly that plated Okada and made it 1-0 early.
Golden dealt another hitless frame in the second, and in the bottom of the inning, the Terps got hot and loaded up the bases with zero outs. Caitlyn Koenig pinch-hit for JoJo McRae and did what she needed to do, plating Bailey Boyd and putting the Terps up 2-0. Okada continued to hit exceptionally well, singling home McRae and Voulgaris and extending the lead to four.
In the third, Voulgaris hit a three-run blast which nearly sailed over the scoreboard and then Regan Kerr sent a nasty chopper to second which plated Micaela Abbatine and made it 8-0. Portland State got on the board in the next inning, launching a judgement-call solo homer which flirted with the foul pole.
The Terps had an answer however and scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth -- two from an Anna Kufta RBI double and another when Kufta got home on an error.
The Vikings applied pressure when the needed to, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth and four more in the sixth, cutting the Terps' lead to two. Sami Main replaced Golden in the circle in the sixth and got Maryland out of the inning still holding the 11-9 lead.
Voulgaris halted Portland State's momentum and hit a huge RBI triple, making it 12-9 through six and sent Sami Main back to the circle to close it out for the Terps. The Vikings couldn't get anything going off Main and Maryland would win it, 12-9. Main was credited with the save, allowing four hits and two earned runs in two innings pitched while Golden would earn her sixth win of the season.
Maryland returns to the diamond next weekend at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. where they'll play four games against George Washington, Florida Atlantic, North Carolina and UNC Greensboro.
