
Maryland Readies For Carolina Classic

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland will play its fourth non-conference tournament of this season this weekend when the Terps head to Chapel Hill, N.C. for four games at the Carolina Classic.
The Terps (9-6) will play games against George Washington (7-2), Florida Atlantic (8-7), North Carolina (6-7) and UNC Greensboro (8-6). Redshirt sophomore Micaela Abbatine will return to UNC, where she spent her first two seasons before transferring to Maryland.

- Maryland softball got off to its best start as a team through three weeks since 2015 after going 3-2 at the Amy S. Harrison Classic and improving to a 9-6 overall record.
- The Terps split their matchups against Portland State and hosts UC Riverside, and topped then 10-1 UNLV in their lone meeting.
- Senior Pitcher Sydney Golden was phenomenal in the circle for the Terps, going 3-0 on the weekend and dealing a shutout against then 10-1 UNLV and pitching two complete games, finishing the Amy S. Harrison Classic with a 3.33 ERA in 21 innings pitched. She also struck out six batters, only allowing 24 hits and 10 earned runs.
- Bailey Boyd led the team in batting the past weekend, hitting .563 on nine hits, a double and three RBI, in addition to stealing three bases.
- Freshman Taylor Okada continued on her tear, batting .474 on the weekend on nine hits, one double, two triples and three RBI.
- Anna Kufta notched her 75th career hit, her 50th career RBI, and her 10th career home run Feb. 8-10 at the Trojan Classic in Troy, Ala.
- Bailey Boyd reached 50 career hits and 50 career runs last weekend at the Amy S. Harrison Classic, where she went 9-16 (.563), scoring five runs and batting in three more.
- Amanda Brashear tallied four hits at the Amy S. Harrison Classic and inched closer to 100 career hits (98). Sydney Golden fanned six batters on the weekend to put her two K's away from reaching 200 in her career (198).
- As a team, Maryland ranks fourth in batting in the Big Ten (.307) and seventh overall in the conference standings.
- Taylor Okada leads the Big Ten and ranks 10th nationally in hits (23). Her 23 hits are the most of any freshman in the country. Okada's three triples also leads the league and is the fourth-highest mark in the country.
- Anna Kufta ranks third in the Big Ten and 15th nationally in RBI (20).
- Sydney Golden's six wins is the third-most in the Big Ten and ranks top-20 nationally (19th).
- Five freshman saw game action in the first weekend of the 2019 season. Gracie Voulgaris and Taylor Okada started in all five games to start the season, Regan Kerr started in three games and played in all five, while Victoria Galvan pitched 7.1 innings through three games, Amelia Jarecke pitched two scoreless innings through two games and Caitlyn Koenig played in two games.
- Sophomores JoJo McRae, Shelby Younkin, and Taylor Wilson saw significant playing time as freshmen last season, each appearing in over 30 games. Several freshmen are set to see significant playing time again in 2019.
- Three starters return to the 2019 starting lineup in Amanda Brashear, Bailey Boyd, and Anna Kufta.
- Wright's 2019 squad features just six upperclassmen - three juniors and three seniors.
