Maryland Drops Stetson, Wins Series

DELAND, Fla. – Sophomore Chris Alleyne hit two home runs as the Maryland baseball team defeated Stetson, 8-4, to notch a road series win Sunday afternoon at Melching Field.

The Terrapins (9-5) jumped all over the Hatters and led 6-0 after four and a half innings. Stetson (6-9) eventually pulled the game within two after seven, but the Terps tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth and senior righty John Murphy recorded the last six outs to end the game.

"The next step for our team was taking care of business on the road," head coach Rob Vaughn said. "We haven't been great at that so far this season so it was nice to get out of here with a big win. I thought we competed really hard."

Alleyne doubled to begin the game and ended up scoring on a Taylor Wright double. In the second, Tommy Gardiner and Caleb Walls walked before Alleyne was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore Randy Bednar then hit a sac fly to make it a 2-0 game.

The third inning saw Benjamin Cowles get hit by a pitch with one down before Justin Vought doubled down the left field line to plate the freshman and tack on another run for the Terps. In the fourth, sophomore Michael Pineiro was hit by a pitch before Alleyne hit the first home run his of career over the wall in right.

Vought hit a solo home run to make it a 6-0 game in the fifth. Maryland starter freshman right-hander Trevor LaBonte carried a no-hitter through four and a third before allowing a run in the fifth. LaBonte was unable to get through the fifth and ended his day giving up three runs and five hits.

Stetson ended up only scoring two in the fifth after Will Glock worked the Terps out of a runners on the corners jam with one out. Glock got an out in the seventh but then walked the bases loaded. Righty Nick Turnbull allowed a run to score on a ball that got away from Vought behind the plate, before recording a strikeout. Andrew Vail then entered with the bases once again loaded and induced a groundout to end the inning.

Alleyne gave the Terps some insurance in the eighth with a two-run home run from the left side of the plate after hitting his earlier big fly from the right side. Murphy then entered after Vail let up a lead-off double in the eighth and got the final six outs to secure the win.

Maryland is back in action Wednesday at Delaware. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., and fans can listen to the action on the Maryland Baseball Network.
