ROSEMONT, Ill. – Maryland men's basketball forward Jalen Smith has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after a sensational performance in the Terrapins' victory over Minnesota last week.
Smith is the first Terrapin to win a conference's freshman of the week award three times since Melo Trimble (2014-15). The only other Terps to win it at least three times were Joe Smith (1993-94), Johnny Rhodes (1992-93), Jerrod Mustaf (1988-89), Derrick Lewis (1984-85), Adrian Branch (1981-82), Brad Davis (1974-75) and Tom McMillen (1971-72).
Smith was tremendous in the Terrapins' win over the Gophers, scoring 19 points on a career-best three 3-pointers and adding 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
It marked Smith's fourth double-double of the season, which is tied for the third-most in program history by a freshman since 1989-90. The others to achieve the feat were Joe Smith (20 – 1993-94), Jordan Williams (8 – 2009-10) and Diamond Stone (4 – 2015-16).
Smith and the Terrapins return to action Thursday afternoon when they face either Nebraska or Rutgers in the second round of the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament in Chicago.
