COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland baseball team's ninth inning rally fell short in an 8-6 loss to Creighton at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (12-11) trailed through the contest before attempting a furious comeback in the final inning. Maryland brought the tying run to the plate with two down, but Justin Vought popped out to end the game.
Creighton took the lead in the first off Maryland starter Trevor LaBonte before the freshman settled in to the ballgame. LaBonte ended up striking out a career-high eight batters while allowing just that one earned run in four and two thirds innings.
The Bluejays jumped all over the Maryland bullpen with seven runs in the final three innings. The Terps got one run in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded walk and the score was 8-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth.
In the bottom half of the ninth, Caleb Walls and Michael Pineiro reached on walks before Tommy Gardiner grounded into a fielder's choice that saw Pineiro put out at second. Chris Alleyne, Randy Bednar and Taylor Wright then hit back-to-back-to-back doubles to make the score 8-5. After Maxwell Costes flew out, AJ Lee singled up the middle to make it an 8-6 game. Vought then popped out to first to end the game
Lee reached bases three times for the second time of the weekend to lead the Terps. Maryland returns to action Friday as Big Ten play begins against Indiana. Game one of the three-game series begins at 6:30 p.m., and fans can listen live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
