West Virginia Defeats Maryland Wednesday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – West Virginia scored four runs in the first inning and did not trail in an 8-1 win over the Maryland baseball team Wednesday night.

What to Know
  • The Terrapins (16-16, 3-3 Big Ten) gave up four runs in the top of the first as starter Nick Turnbull worked just a third of an inning. Freshman Daniel O'Connor worked the Terps out of that frame and gave up just a run in two and a third of an inning.
  • West Virginia added single runs in the third and fifth, along with two in the eighth. An AJ Lee sac fly in the fifth was Maryland's lone run.
  • Freshman catcher Zach Doss made his season debut entering behind the plate for Sebastian Holte-Mancera in the fourth. Doss reached base on a walk, hit by pitch and a wild pitch after striking out in his first game as a Terp.
  • Freshman Kody Milton notched a double in the ninth, the first extra base hit of his career.
  • Sophomore Michael Pineiro made a sensational full extension catch in right center field in the eighth. He was making just his fourth start of the season in right.
Other Stuff
  • Lee extended his reached base streak to seven games, tied for the active team lead with Justin Vought.
  • Maryland played longest nine-inning game of the season (3:43).
  • An unknown quantity of hot dogs were consumed on Dollar Dog Day. Everybody was happy about that.
Up Next

The Terps travel to Illinois for the second straight weekend when they face Northwestern in Evanston. All three games are on BTN Plus and the Maryland Baseball Network.
