COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's tennis team dropped a Friday afternoon showdown, 4-0, against the Michigan State Spartans at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park.
The Spartans took an early advantage after they captured the doubles point to begin the match. After the two sides split a pair of 6-4 decisions at second and third doubles, Michigan State was able to capitalize and take the doubles point with a 7-5 win at the top doubles spot.
Michigan State continued its strong play when singles began, winning a trio of matches at third, fourth and sixth singles to take home the 4-0 win. A trio of singles matches went unfinished, including a split for Maryland's
Millie Stretton at second singles. After dropping her first set, Stretton went 6-1 in the second to force a third that went unfinished.
Junior
Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka won her first set at fifth singles before her match was also called unfinished near the end of the second set.
Maryland will be back in action on Sunday, closing out its home schedule with a match against 14th-ranked Michigan at the JTCC in College Park. Maryland will honor seniors
Arnelle Sullivan and
Millie Stretton following the completion of the match, which is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
