COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland wrestling family mourns the passing of Ernest Fischer, class of 1954, who passed away Thursday. He was 88 years old.
"We are saddened to hear about the passing of Maryland legend Ernie Fischer," interim head coach
Jimmy Sheptock said. "He is one of the best wrestlers to come through our program. Our thoughts are with his family during this time."
A member of the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame who was inducted in 1989, Fischer was an NCAA runner-up at 167 pounds during his senior season in 1954. He lost only one dual match in his collegiate career. Fischer won two Southern Conference Championships and was named the conference's Most Outstanding Wrestler in 1952.
Fischer also had an outstanding wrestling career following his time as a Terrapin, wrestling in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne while also serving in the US Air Force. He was also voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the 1956 National AAU Championships.
