Terps Take Out VCU, 10-5

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland baseball team exploded for 10 run on 17 hits and defeated VCU, 10-5, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Tuesday night.

What to Know

  • VCU scored in the top of the first... And then never led again as the Terps tied it in the bottom half of the first and led for good after a four-run second. VCU came within one after three, but the Terps scored four between the fourth and fifth to clinch the game.
  • Maryland saw 2017 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Tyler Blohm return from injury to start the contest. After allowing a solo home run on the second pitch of the game, Blohm settled in and struck out three over two innings of work.
  • The Terps plated a run in the first on a Maxwell Costes single that scored Randy Bednar. It was the beginning of a sensational day for Bednar as the sophomore went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
  • In the second, the Terps loaded the bases with three straight singles before Ben Irvine picked up his first career RBI on a groundout to second. Bednar singled in a pair of runs before Taylor Wright smacked a double down the right field line to bring home Bednar.
  • VCU scored three runs of Daniel O'Connor in the third before lefty Sean Fisher came in to put out the fire. Fisher tossed two and two thirds innings and picked up his first win of the year.
  • The Terps started to put the game away in the fourth when AJ Lee hit a solo homer to make it 6-4. Josh Maguire then added a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle to plate two more.
  • In the fifth, Benjamin Cowles smacked a home run over the wall in left-center, his second homer of the season to make it a 9-5 game.
  • Maryland responded to a run from VCU in the seventh when Lee notched a single that plated Cowles.
  • The combination of LHP Drew Wilden, LHP Andrew Vail and RHP John Murphy finished off the contest for Maryland.

Other Stuff

  • AJ Lee and Justin Vought have both reached base in 16 consecutive games, tied for the team lead. Lee has a hit in seven straight contests. Cowles has reached in 10 straight games, the longest run of his career.
  • Bednar has two four hit games in his last four games. He leads the Terps with 14 multi-hit games and is tied for the team lead with Maxwell Costes with 10 multi-RBI games.
  • Cowles had a career day, notching his second three-hit game and finishing a triple away from the cycle. The freshman is slashing .458/.567/.917 in the past nine games.
  • Shout out to one of Maryland baseball's biggest fans, Wyatt Vaughn. The young son of Maryland head coach Rob Vaughn is dealing with a broken leg, but it doesn't stop the wearer of the coolest red cast in town. The little man throws baseballs. He catches baseballs. He wears catching masks. He swings bats. He makes media appearances. They say every day you should laugh and be brought to tears. Well, Wyatt does that. What a guy.
