Terps Take To The Track On Day Two Of Penn Relays
4/27/2019 1:37:00 PM | Track & Field
PHILADELPHIA -- The weather couldn't stop the Terps from continuing to demonstrate their depth both on the track and in the field. Friday brought the second wave of Terps to historic Franklin Field under adverse conditions. Two weather delays and a stadium evacuation delayed the second day of competition, but it couldn't slow this consistent group.
Following the first morning delay, Maryland pole vaulter Chris Spiess cleared 4.55m (14'11"), continuing a three meet streak of consistent mid-to-upper-4.5m clearances.
Triple jumper Leah Blackall, who currently ranks second in the Big Ten, lept 12.10m (39-8.5), to earn a fourth place finish in the women's championship competition.
The women's Championship of America 4x200m relay of Xahria Santiago, Jaida Smith, Venida Fagan and Bria Mack posted a 1:37.00.
Cameron Vereen ran a season-best 10.70 in the 100m dash in a deep field of competitors.
Bria Mack and Jaida Smith finished back-to-back in the women's 100m dash, posting times of 11.83 and 11.88.
In her second hurdle competition of the weekend, Nadia Hackett ran 14.44 in the women's 100m hurdles.
The men's 4x400m relay team of Colin Rowe, Dashawn Morris, Aaron Robinson and Kameron Jones earned the top qualifying spot for Saturday's race. The team led the field with a time of 3:06.87. That mark moves into the second place on Maryland's all-time list and they will race for the title on Saturday in the men's Championship of America Invitational race.
Unfortunately, the weather did hinder the javelin competition, keeping Lillian Hill and the rest of the field out of the competition due to conditions.
Again, the Terps wrapped up the day of competition with success. The women's sprint medley relay team of Imani Gray, Venida Fagan, Destiny Ward and Mackenzie Morgan won their heat of the race in 3:58.45.
The Terps will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, April 27, for the the final day of competition at the Penn Relays.
