Terps Bested by Michigan State in Extra Innings

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Maryland's bats were going today as the Terps finished with 16 hits, its second-most this season and most in a conference game since April 5, 2015 when Maryland knocked around Indiana for 21 hits, but fell to the Spartans in eight innings, 7-8.

JoJo McRae paced the Terps at the plate, going 4-5 on the day with four singles, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Sammie Stefan went yard again and went 3-4 on the day, launching her team-leading fifth home run of the season well over the scoreboard at Secchia Stadium. Amanda Brashear, Gracie Voulgaris and Bailey Boyd also had multi-hit days.

The Terps got off to another hot start, scoring four runs in the first inning on base knocks from Voulgaris, Boyd and Stefan. Michigan State wouldn't stay down in the four-run hole long however, and scored three of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Stefan scored in the third on a Michigan State defensive breakdown to put the Terps up 5-3, but the Spartans would take the lead for the first time in the game as back-to-back home runs gave them a one-run advantage.

In the fourth inning, Brashear doubled and scored McRae to even it up at 6, and Sammie Stefan's homer in the fifth gave Maryland the one-run advantage.

The Spartans again tied it up in the sixth, but the Terps got out of two consecutive bases-loaded jams to round out the sixth and seventh innings to send it to extra innings.

In the eighth, the Terps went down in order and Michigan State hit a sac fly to walk it off. Maryland and Michigan State match up tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the rubber match.
