IOWA CITY, -- Senior Millie Stretton tallied her team-best sixth singles victory of the year, but the Maryland women's tennis team fell at Iowa, 6-1, on Sunday.
Stretton won in straight sets at the second singles position, taking the match 6-4, 6-3. The win was also Stretton's second conference victory of the season, previously winning in Maryland's win over Rutgers last month.
The senior was also on the verge of winning her singles match, tied at four when the contest went unfinished due to Iowa clinching the doubles point with a win at second and third doubles.
In singles play, Maryland also saw senior Arnelle Sullivan drop a tight, three-set match at fourth singles. After dropping the first set, Sullivan blanked Iowa's Sophie Clark, 6-0, in the second to force a decisive third. Clark, however, rallied to take the final set by a score of 6-4 to earn the victory.
Maryland will close out its home conference schedule next weekend, hosting Michigan State on Friday before the Michigan Wolverines come to College Park on Sunday. Friday's match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., while Sunday morning's showdown with Michigan will be at 11 a.m. Following the conclusion of Sunday's match, Maryland will celebrate the careers of seniors Arnelle Sullivan and Millie Stretton.
