MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Maryland baseball team (24-25, 9-10 Big Ten) took down Minnesota (22-24, 11-8 Big Ten) 7-3 at Siebert Field Friday night.
What to Know
- The Terrapins essentially led the entire way after scoring in the top of the first. The game was briefly tied in the third, but the Terps retook the lead in the top of the fourth and did not give it up.
- Senior right-hander Hunter Parsons tossed seven innings and struck out eight while allowing three earned runs. He retired the first six batters he faced before giving up two runs in the third. Parsons also allowed a run in the sixth.
- The Terps got on the board in the first with a Michael Pineiro sac fly. On that play, Minnesota starter Max Meyer suffered a lower leg injury that forced him to leave the game.
- Maryland got a second run in the third after Pineiro doubled home Randy Bednar. Bednar gave the Terps the lead in the fourth, slapping a single up the middle to plate Josh Maguire.
- That fourth inning also saw Pineiro pick up an RBI walk and Justin Vought brought home a run when he was hit by a pitch.
- The Terps responded to a Gopher run in the sixth with two in the seventh. Maguire hit a sac fly to score the first run before Bednar's second RBI single of the contest made it 7-3.
- After Parsons departed, the Terps got a scoreless eighth from freshman lefty Andrew Vail and a scoreless ninth from senior righty John Murphy to end the ballgame.
- Pineiro reached base three times while Bednar reached base four times.
Other Stuff
- With his win, Parsons became just the second pitcher in Maryland history to record nine or more wins in a season. Parsons' nine wins puts him third all-time behind Mike Shawaryn's 2015 season (13 wins) and 2014 season (11 wins). The victory also moved Parsons up to a tie for seventh on Maryland's career wins list (16 wins).
- Parsons now leads the Big Ten in victories and is tied with Indiana's Pauly Milto for tops in the league with 89 innings pitched.
- Pineiro is now batting .375 in 48 Big Ten at bats with 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored. Bednar's Big Ten slash line is .363/.442/.675.
- AJ Lee has now reached in 24 consecutive games, which is the longest streak for Terp this season. He has tied his career-high streak, which he set in the 2017 season.
- Lee was hit by two pitches during the contest and now has been hit by 16 pitches this season, the eight-most in a single season in Maryland history. Lee has been hit by 38 pitches for his career, the fourth-most in Maryland history.
- Maxwell Costes was also hit by two pitches, increasing his Big Ten leading total to 17 for the season. That mark is tied for sixth all-time in a single season in Maryland history.
- The best race in all of sports is Costes (17), Lee (16) and Cowles' (14) competition to get hit by pitches. Don't forget Vought either, he's been hit by 12 pitches this year. The Terps have been hit by 86 this season. The program single season record, incredibly, is 126 in 2014. The Terps led the nation in the category that season.
- Former Maryland star and Minnesota native Blake Schmit was in attendance at Siebert Field tonight and joined the Maryland Baseball Network and radio superstar Connor Newcomb in the fourth inning. The Terps scored three in that frame. Clutch even in the booth, Blake.
- It was dollar hot dog night at Siebert Field and Goldy Gopher wore a hot dog outfit for the occasion. Time to end this recap.
