Sixth-Seeded Terps Open Up Big Ten Tournament Against Illinois

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Maryland baseball team returns to the Big Ten Tournament after a one-year hiatus this week. The Terps swept Iowa to earn the three-seed in Omaha and will face off with third-seeded Illinois at 10 a.m. ET on Wednesday morning.
  • The Terps have had solid success at the Big Ten Tournament in their three prior appearances (2015,16, 17) never finishing lower than fourth and advancing to the finals in 2015. The Terps are 8-5 all-time at the tournament. The Terps are 7-8 all-time against Illinois.
  • Maryland had six players earn All-Big Ten honors, the most all-conference honorees in program history. Freshman first baseman Maxwell Costes (first team, all-freshman team,), sophomore outfielder Randy Bednar (second team), senior shortstop AJ Lee (third team), senior third baseman Taylor Wright (third team), senior right-handed pitcher Hunter Parsons (third team) and redshirt freshman DH Michael Pineiro (third team, all-freshman team) were all selected.
  • Costes is Maryland's second Big Ten Freshman of the Year in the last three seasons (Tyler Blohm, 2017). He led Big Ten freshman in home runs (12), doubles (14), slugging (.500), RBIs (44) and total bases (101). He hit eight homers in Big Ten play and earned three Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
  • Lee is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week after a sensational week that saw him hit .with 10 hits, six RBI, six runs scored, three home runs and two doubles.
  • Senior right-hander John Murphy is starting to climb up Maryland's all-time saves list. Murphy has 16 for his career which puts him third all-time in school history. Murphy's 11 saves this season makes him one of three players in Maryland history to reach double digit saves in a season (Kevin Mooney, Brett Cecil).
  • Parsons finished as the Big Ten leader with nine wins, a mark that is 3rd all-time in Maryland history. With his ninth win, Parsons joined Mike Shawaryn as the only pitcher in Maryland history to notch nine or more wins in a season.
