COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Former Maryland baseball student-athlete Taylor Wright earned a pair of postseason academic honors. Wright was named a 2018-19 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a 2019 Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.
Wright is Maryland's first Big Ten Distinguished scholar since Tayler Stiles earned the honor during the 2016-17 year. Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be a recipient of Academic All-Big Ten Recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled fulltime at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.
Wright is Maryland's first Academic All-District selection since Kevin Mooney in 2015. An economics major, Wright held a 3.71 GPA for the year. The award recognizes the nation's top student athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Wright capped off his Maryland career in style with a huge offensive season. The Vancouver, B.C., native led the Big Ten in doubles in the regular season with 20, a mark that ranks t-4th in Maryland history. Wright slashed .290/.375/.429 for the season and finished with 12 steals and 31 RBIs.
