COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland opens its 127th season of football Saturday at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium as it looks to pick up its 10th-straight season opening-victory as the Terrapins host the Howard Bison.
THIS WEEKEND'S STORYLINES
1. Head coach
Michael Locksley is set to begin his first full season at the helm of the Maryland football program. Born and raised in the DMV, Locksley returns home with over 20 years of coaching experience, including 10 years with the Terps. The winner of the 2018 Broyles Award, given to the nation's top assistant coach, Locksley has spent the previous three years at Alabama, where he won the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship.
2. Redshirt sophomore Anthony McFarland Jr. became the first freshman in Maryland history to record four 100-yard rushing games last season, including back-to-back 200-yard games against Indiana (210) and Ohio State (298). McFarland also had 100-yard games against Temple (9/15) and Minnesota (9/22) and finished the season with the most rushing yards (1,034) by a freshman in program history.
3. The Terps have won nine consecutive season-openers dating back to 2010, the fifth-longest streak among power-five schools in the country, trailing only Ohio State (19), Alabama (17), Utah (11) and Michigan State (10). In the nine-game streak, Maryland has outscored its opponents by an average margin of 16 points (38-22) and totaled at least 34 points in six straight games. The Terps have beat a ranked Texas team in each of the past two season openers, including last year's 34-29 win. Maryland and Alabama are the only two teams that have beaten at least two ranked foes over their season-opener streaks.
4. Junior transfer quarterback Josh Jackson has been named Maryland's starting quarterback. Coming from Virginia Tech, Jackson had a sensational freshman season in 2017, leading all Power Five freshmen QBs in passing yards (2,991) and completions (236), while ranking second in touchdown passes (20). The Michigan native set Virginia Tech freshmen records in TD passes, passing yards and 200+ yard passing games (9).
5. Maryland recorded 18 interceptions last season, its most since the 2010 season and the fifth-highest mark in the country and second-best in the Big Ten, trailing only Iowa, who had 20. The Terps had at least one interception in the first 11 games of the season, one of only two teams (Utah State) to have an interception in 11 of 12 games.
6. Maryland will return 75.3 percent of its total offense for the 2019 season, bringing back players that produced 3,360 of the team's 4,457 yards from 2018, as well as student-athletes that scored 30 of the Terps' 38 offensive touchdowns.
7. Maryland converted on 93 percent of its red zone opportunities last season (29-31), the fourth-best mark in the country and the best in the Big Ten. The Terps converted on their first 26 trips of the season, before finally getting stopped in the 11th game of the year against Ohio State. The Terps scored touchdowns on 19 of the 31 trips to the red zone while kicking field goals on the other 10.
