TOWSON, Md. – Five Terrapins found the back of the cage as the fourth-ranked Maryland field hockey team rolled to a 5-0 win at Towson Wednesday afternoon.
Junior
Hannah Bond, sophomore
Linda Cobano, senior
Madison Maguire, freshman
Emma DeBerdine and senior
Jen Bleakney scored for the Terrapins.
Maryland (4-1) dominated the ball most of the game, outshooting the Tigers, 27-0.
"It was great to get a lot of players in and to score three goals off of penalty corners," head coach
Missy Meharg said. "We focused on a simple tactic, which was to pass. We did a great job with that to start the game. To actually get three goals in the first quarter is just great for us."
The Terrapins wasted no time getting on the board scoring first three goals in the first 5:25 of the match. Bond opened the scoring when she collected a loose ball and sent it in for the opening score, just 71 seconds into the match.
Just over 90 seconds later, Maryland made it a two-goal lead when Maguire found the goal line.
Cobano extended the Terps' lead to 3-0 when she scored off another penalty corner, assisted by Bond and sophomore
Bibi Donraadt.
Maryland took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
After a scoreless third period, the Terps added to the score three minutes into the fourth quarter.
Emma DeBerdine scored off a pass from fellow freshman
Sam Zywna to make it 4-0.
With just under six minutes remaining in the match, Bleakney inserted on a penalty corner, then scored when she finished off a pass from junior
Bodil Keus to finalize the score at 5-0.
The Terrapins had 20 penalty corners and did not allow one to the Tigers.
Bleakney and Maguire are leading the Terrapins with three goals so far this season. Nine total Terps have found the cage.
Maryland is ranked No. 4 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll released Sept. 10. The Terrapins have been ranked in the top 5 in 183 of 215 polls, dating back to 1999.
