Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#4 Terps Top #10 Tigers, 4-3, in Overtime Victory

COLLEGE PARK, Md. –  Junior Hannah Bond tipped in the game-winning goal with no time on the clock to lead the No. 4-ranked Maryland field hockey squad to a 4-3 overtime victory over No. 10 Princeton Tuesday night at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

The Terps (8-1) trailed the Tigers (3-4) twice in the top-10 matchup and battled back to force the extra time. Sophomore Linda Cobano scored twice in regulation to give Maryland a brief lead early in the third quarter, then sophomore Bibi Donraadt forced the overtime period with her equalizer in the final minutes. Bond scored her second goal of the year with no time on the clock at the end of overtime.

Maryland and Princeton have gone to overtime in their last three meetings, with the Terrapins taking all three wins, including in last year's NCAA Semifinals.

"To open the second half and get on the board and dominate like that, and then take the foot off the pedal and be disorganized as we let two goals against us, that's a young team," head coach Missy Meharg said. "You look at the reality after that and they found a way and our rotations are good and Katie Bam does a lot of rotations. We are playing different players at different lines. We had some good player-to-player matchups. Hannah Bond's been a player that loves the goal line. Last year with UConn, she had the goal line save defensively and this year, it matters for her. It's very personal. I couldn't be more happy that she decided now."

Princeton got on the board first when Sammy Popper dribbled into the top right side of the circle and cracked a shot for the score, 7:05 into the game.

Maryland tied it up with 10:30 left in the second quarter. Sophomore Linda Cobano sent in a hard shot off a penalty corner that deflected in off a Princeton defender. The teams stayed tied at half.

Cobano scored her second goal of the night just 27 seconds into the third quarter. She cracked a shot, it was saved, then she collected the rebound and tucked her second shot just inside the post for the 2-1 lead for Maryland.

Just 28 seconds later, Princeton tied the game up when Clara Roth sent one in off a rebounded shot. Five minutes later, Roth struck again when she brought the ball in along the left baseline and flipped it in for the 3-2 lead with 23 minutes to play.

The Terps had back-to-back penalty corners with just under 5:00 to play. Donraadt tied the game on the second one when she collected a ball tipped to her from freshman Emma DeBerdine and scored from the post with 4:02 left in the game.

The two teams went to the 10-minute, 7-vs-7, golden goal overtime period. The Terrapins had two penalty corners early in the period, but both were stopped.

Bond brought the ball into the circle and earned the Terps another penalty corner with 7 seconds to play. Bond took a pass from Cobano and shot from the right post. The shot was saved and she buried the rebound for the win.

Maryland took 22 shots to Princeton's seven and had 13 penalty corners to two for the Tigers.

Senior goalkeeper Noelle Frost made two saves in the match.

Next, Maryland will play at No. 18 Rutgers (4-3) Saturday at 1 p.m. The Terps-Scarlet Knights game will be streamed on BTN Plus. Fans around the world can watch with their BTN Plus subscriptions, which start at $9.99 a month. Live stats will also be available.

Maryland Head Coach Missy Meharg

Opening Statement:
"To open the second half and get on the board and dominate like that, and then take the foot off the pedal and be so disorganized as we let two goals against us, that's a young team. You look at the reality after that and they found a way and our rotations are good and Katie Bam does a lot of rotations. We are playing different players at different lines. One of the things that Princeton did do when they get a card is they start to play their best attackers in the backfield to come through especially up the side and I thought we matched up really well. We did some good player-to-player matchups. You know, Hannah Bond's been a player that loves the goal line. Last year with UConn, she had the goal line save defensively and this year, it matters for her. It's very personal. I couldn't be more happy that she decided now."

On her expectations of Hannah Bond:
"I don't think Hannah looks at it as just her. She's servicing her unit all the time. In an attack penalty corner with seven on each side, there are only four people. It's not like we're talking about a lot (of people). She has a lot of space. She will do anything to put a ball over the goal line. She will put herself out there to score goals and stop them so I could be happier. She has a nice cut on her chin from celebrating with teammates."

On facing Princeton:
"It's even talent. I think the coaching staff is outstanding for obvious reasons and I think the players are outstanding. I think that our coaching staff is outstanding and I think that our players are outstanding. It's going to be a battle."

Junior Defender Hannah Bond

On her emotions at the end of the game:
"I felt still calm and controlled. We practiced things like this in training during the week. It's a pretty normal situation for us like we put under time pressure. We still know the drill, we still know what to do. It's pretty standard even though it does not seem like that from an outside perspective."

On emotions during the score review:
"I wouldn't say it was calm, I would say we were still quite excited. We knew the rules that we thought were put into place that would explain why it should be a goal. We were still quite high on emotions and quite positive. You play out the short corner even if time ends during the corner you play it out. Even if the whistle had gone to end time, it would have still been a goal. We were pretty positive about it."

Sophomore Midfielder Linda Cobano

On her emotions at the end of the game:
"It's a lot of adrenaline on the field while you're doing the sprints on and off the field. When it comes to those important situations when we have that corner and only 7 seconds left, you know it has to happen now. You just have to find a way to calm down, breathe and get your focus on. When Hannah scored it was just pure relief. There were so many emotions that come up."

On her breakout game:
"I think it's a development that we have made with the team from the first game until this game. I needed some time in the new system, get to know the players. That's always a little challenging. In the end, I feel like I have found my position on the team. I am so glad that it worked out pretty well for us today. I mean yes, it is important to score those goals, but in the end, it's teamwork at it's best that we can fight back into the game although we were one down, several times."
