Maryland Battles Down to 10 Men, Draws With Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – The Maryland men's soccer team notched 18 shots despite being down to 10 men for 71 minutes and ended up with a 0-0 draw with Wisconsin in Madison Friday night.

From The Boss
"I am incredibly proud of our effort tonight. Our players showed great heart and determination after going down to 10 men. I thought we played a fantastic first half and I was excited by the quality of our play. I thought we deserved the result even when we went down to 10 men. I'm excited about where our team is headed." – Sasho Cirovski

View From The Box
  • Maryland was all over the Badgers from the opening whistle, dominating possession and getting chances throughout the first half. Maryland had 12 total shots in the first 45 minutes, a stat that told the story of how in control the Terrapins were on the road. The match started an hour and 15 minutes after scheduled kickoff because of weather.
  • Unfortunately for the road side, it was unable to come up with an opening goal before the complexion of the match changed in the 40th minute when freshman Malcolm Johnston received a straight red card for what the referee deemed to be excessive contact to a Wisconsin player.
  • The Terps did have some very solid chances in the opening frame. Over a minute span in the 29th minute, sophomore Brayan Padilla drew a corner with a dangerous attempt that was blocked wide before sophomore Brett St. Martin headed wide off the corner. Junior Eric Matzelevich forced a corner in the 25th minute.
  • The second half saw the Terps battle hard down a player. Even down to 10, Maryland generated some quality chances and held good possession, even as the emboldened Badgers started to press forward and find some of the game.
  • St. Martin found a free header on the far post in the 63rd minute, but his header was just kept out. Padilla continued to fire away, his long range try off a free kick was saved in the 51st minute.
  • Maryland went with a back three of St. Martin, senior Johannes Bergmann and freshman Marques Antoine. The trio performed admirably, snuffing out Wisconsin's more dangerous attacks after Maryland went down a player.
  • The Terps were buoyed by the return of senior captain Eli Crognale in the center of the park. Crognale had a solid contest running the game in the midfield.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Niklas Neumann put up a clean sheet, needing five saves, most which came after Maryland was at a numbers disadvantage. Padilla led the Terps with six shots, four of them which went on frame. Maryland forced nine saves out of Dean Cowdroy in the Wisconsin goal.
