COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Terps opened the 2020 season victorious with a 4-3 win over Georgetown Saturday. 

Maryland started out the day strong in doubles, highlighted by sophomore Chloe Hamlin and junior Zoe Kulkarni's win 6-0 win over Elena De Santis and Anna Short in the No. 2 doubles match. Freshman Ayana Akli and Kate Yemelyennka followed suit, posting a 6-0 victory over Gerogetown's Agata Mikos and Olivia Ashton at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point for the Terps.

"I'm very happy with how we came out in doubles and that set the tone for the day," head coach Katie Dougherty said "We competed well across the board and Georgetown is a well-coached and tough team to play, especially in the first match of the season. We've been having productive and focused practices leading up to today and that showed on most courts. Back to work this week and three more great opportunities next week."

Senior Saya Usui and junior Eva Alexandrova clinched the third and final doubles win over Chloe Bendetti and Sofie Moenster, 5-2.

Singles play began with a solid start from Akli, putting up a quick 6-0, 6-2 victory over Moenster. Kulkarni fought in a back and forth battle with Murphy for the first set, ultimately capturing the opening set, 6-4 before clinching the match with a 6-2 second set win. 

Usui also claimed a 6-2, 6-2 singles win for the Terps in the No. 6 singles match. Hamlin then defeated Georgetown's Mikos 6-1 in the first set, but found herself going to a third after coming up short 6-2. The sophomore gave a valiant effort but fell 6-0. 

Freshman Vera Markovic was able to win the first set, but ended up dropping her match in three sets, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 to De Santis. 

The Terps will be back in action at home against Southern Utah at noon in the JTCC on Friday, Jan. 24.
