COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's tennis team notched its second win of the season on Friday, topping the Southern Utah Thunderbirds 6-1 in the JTCC.
In doubles play, freshman Ayana Akli and senior Kate Yemelyanenka took care of Southern Utah's Chloe Purkiss and Jessica Stefan early in the No. 1 doubles spot, 6-1. In the No. 3 doubles spot, junior Eva Alexandrova and senior Saya Usui were quick to follow suit, defeating Alexandra Ngo and Paula Tascon 6-1. Sophomore Chloe Hamlin and junior Zoe Kulkarni were up 4-3 at the time the Terps took the doubles point.
The Terps continued their winning momentum into singles play, with newcomer Adela Josefova putting up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Purkiss in her first collegiate match in the No. 4 singles spot. Akli then put up her second singles win of the season in the No. 1 spot, topping Zoe Tanti 6-3, 6-1. Â
Kulkarni started out her first set at the No. 5 spot 1-0 against Alexandra Ngo, with the Thunderbird then tying things up 1-1. Kulkarni fought back taking each remaining game of the first set before winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.Â
Usui found herself down 0-3 in her first set against Georgia Hosking, but she battled back to tie things at three a piece before controlling the rest of the match and winning by a score of 6-4, 6-1.Â
The last two singles matches proved to be tough competition between the Terps and Thunderbirds, with each going to deciding tiebreakers. Yemelyanenka found herself down a set, but came back to win the second 6-2. The senior then took the tiebreaker 10-5 to give Maryland its sixth point of the match.Â
Hamlin was able to win the first set of her match 7-6 after winning a tiebreak 7-1. Stefan then rebounded and took the second set, 6-2, before clinching the match with a 10-4 win in a deciding tiebreak.Â
"We were able to jump out to another quick start in doubles and did a good job winning five sets in singles to set the tone of the match" head coach Katie Dougherty said. "Southern Utah was athletic and scrappy and we played well to win today".Â
Maryland will be back in action for a doubleheader on Sat. Jan 25, taking on Towson at 11:00 a.m., and Coppin State at 3:30 p.m., in the JTCC.
