COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's tennis team clinched its fourth win of the season on Saturday to stay undefeated at home with victories over Towson and Coppin State in the JTCC.

Against Towson, the Terps took the doubles point in quick fashion with freshman Ayana Akli and senior Kate Yemelyanenka defeating Themis Haliou and Phoebe Collins, 6-1. Freshman Adela Josefova and senior Saya Usui followed suit, taking down Jessica Assenmacher and Lauryn Jacobs, 6-4. Junior Zoe Kulkarni and sophomore Chloe Hamliin were up 4-3 at the time Maryland won the doubles point.

Singles play against Towson proved successful, with five Terps putting up victories over their opponents. Akli shut out Themis Haliou 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot, with junior Eva Alexandrova doing the same over Amelia Lawson at the No. 2. Josefova finished third at the No. 4 spot winning in straight sets over Collins, 6-4, 6-1, while Usui knocked out Assenmacher 6-4, 6-2. Yemelyanenka put up a tough fight after taking the first set over Sarah Pospischill 6-4, but lost the final two sets after a tiebreaker 6-1, 10-2.

After the first win of the day, Maryland continued its momentum into a 4-0 victory over Coppin State.

In doubles, Hamlin and Kulkarni shut out Mackenzie Jones and Megan Etienne at the No. 3 spot 6-0, with Alexandrova and Josefova doing the same over Brittanie Cahua and Aija Hrnjic soon after. Akli and Yemelyanenka were up 5-0 once the doubles point was awarded to the Terps.

In singles play, Josefova put up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tinashe Gwaze to finish first at the No. 3 spot for the Terps. Akli followed soon after, defeating Shariah Dunwell at the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-1. Kulkarni secured the win for the Terps at the No. 5 spot, putting up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jones.

Usui, Hamlin and Markovic were all up a set when Maryland clinched the win.

"It's great to see the improvement as a group from match to match" head coach Katie Dougherty said. "Things are starting to click in doubles and our execution is getting better in singles. We have a great opportunity next weekend against two strong teams and we need to have a great week of practice and focus on improving every week".

Maryland will be back in action against Columbia on Feb. 1 at noon in the JTCC.
