COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Darryl Morsell and Eric Ayala scored 15 points each and grad transfer Galin Smith added a career-high 12 points as Maryland took down local foe Navy 82-52 on Friday afternoon at the XFINITY Center.
Maryland shot 68.2 percent from the field on 30-of-44 shooting, its highest shooting percentage since shooting at a 73.9 percent clip (34-for-46) against Wake Forest on Jan. 28, 1986. It is the fifth-highest single-game shooting percentage in program history.
The Terrapins (2-0) closed the first half with a 32-25 advantage, which Maryland quickly extended in the opening minutes of the second half. Maryland outscored Navy 50-27 in the second half, shooting 75 percent on 18-of-24 shooting.
Morsell (15), Ayala (15), Aaron Wiggins (14), Smith (12), and Hakim Hart (11) finished with double-digit point totals, while Morsell, Wiggins, and Ayala did so for the second-consecutive game. Wiggins' 14 points all came in the second half on 5-for-5 shooting (3-for-3 3PT) while Hart's 11 points were a career-high. Â
The Terps did a tremendous job sharing the ball, posting 21 assists on 30 made field goals, led by six assists each from Wiggins and Ayala. Maryland created separation from the Midshipmen with sharpshooting from beyond the arc, going 7-for-10 from deep in the second half. Â Â Â
Next, the Terps will face Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. at the XFINITY Center.
