Three Terps earn double-doubles
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 14 Maryland used a second quarter surge to blow past James Madison, 101-59, Saturday morning at the XFINITY Center. The Terrapins (5-1, 1-0 B1G) outscored the Dukes (4-3) by 21 in the second period and never looked back.
Sophomore Ashley Owusu led the way for the Terrapins with 19 points, eight board and seven assists. Sophomore Diamond Miller added 18 points, and senior Chloe Bibby added 17 with 10 boards.
Redshirt sophomore Mimi Collins picked up her first career double-double with 14 points and a career-best 11 boards. Sophomore Faith Masonius chipped in 14 points off the bench and senior Katie Benzan added 12 points. All nine eligible Terrapins scored.
"This was a really fun game for our team," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I thought we were really, really unselfish, when you talk about a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio. An area, especially after the Rutgers game, with defense and rebounding, we really wanted to take some pride there. I thought JMU came out with the first punch and we expected that, given the game last year down at their place, but I loved our response. I thought it was terrific."
Maryland trailed James Madison, 19-16 at the end of the first quarter after shooting just 31 percent in the first 10 minutes. The Terrapins opened the second quarter with a three-point play from Bibby, which started a 16-3 run.
The Terrapins held the Dukes to just 2-for-12 from the field in the second period to take a 45-27 lead into halftime. Bibby scored 10 of her 17 points in that second quarter surge.
The Terps didn't let up in the second half, shooting 70 percent from the field in the third quarter (12-17). Maryland outscored James Madison 85-40 over the final three quarters.
Redshirt freshman Zoe Young made her Terrapin debut, scoring her bucket after suffering a knee injury in preseason last year.
Maryland owns the series over James Madison, 11-1, and has won 11 straight over the Dukes.
After a break for the holidays, Maryland will return to action Thursday, Dec. 31 with a noon ET matchup at Penn State (3-1).
