EDINBORO, Pa. - Danny Bertoni continued to star in his redshirt campaign, winning first place at 141 pounds at the Edinboro Open, while Jonathan Spadafora and Orion Anderson secured runner-up finishes at the Zafirovski Dome Saturday afternoon. Michael North also took home fifth place at 149 pounds to round out the Maryland placers.
Bertoni, who has now placed in four open tournaments during his redshirt season, took home first after a dominating performance that included two major decisions, a technical fall, and two decisions. The Jefferson, Md. native gave up just eight total points in the five matches.
Bertoni got his day started with a 9-0 major decision over Clarion's Alex Blake, then used a 12-2 major decision over Marcus Jean Baptiste of Finger Lakes RTC. The junior advanced after beating Michigan State's Jacob Spiess with a 5-0 decision and earned his ticket to the first-place match with a 18-3 technical fall over Lehigh's Malyke Hines. In the championship bout, Bertoni took down Arizona State's Julian Chlebove with a 7-3 decision.
Orion Anderson took home second place after getting a fall in his first bout - the quickest pin of the season for Maryland (0:35) - and advanced to the first-place match with two straight decisions before falling 1-0 to Lock Haven's DJ Fehlman.
Jonathan Spadafora improved upon his team-high 14 wins with three more, earning three decisions en route to the championship match at 165 pounds where he fell to Michigan's Cameron Amine via a 13-4 major decision.
Michael North battled back through the consolation bracket to earn a fifth place finish, dropping a 11-10 decision in his second bout of the day, but earning three pins and a tech. fall on his way to fifth place.
