COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â The No. 7 Maryland men's basketball team, which sits alone atop the Big Ten standings, is set to face Northwestern in College Park Tuesday evening at 8:00 pm on Big Ten Network. The Terps have won eight straight games, marking their longest conference winning streak since 2001-02. It also marks the seventh time in program history the Terps have won 21 games through 25 contests.
STORYLINES
• Senior Anthony Cowan Jr. was named Big Ten Player of the Week for the third time this season after scoring the team's final 11 points of a 14-0 run to defeat Michigan State. Cowan is the first Terp to earn POW conference honors three times in a season since Greivis Vasquez (2009-10).
• All-American candidate Jalen Smith has recorded eight straight double-doubles (all Terp wins), and is averaging 18.5 points (57% FG), 11.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks during that span. Smith, who leads the Big Ten with 16 double-doubles (fifth nationally), is a top-10 candidate for the Karl Malone Award.
• The Terrapins have improved across a number of categories during their eight-game win streak compared to their first 17 games, most notably 3-pt FG/s (7.1 to 9.1), 3-pt FG% (.306 to .344), assists/g (12.5 to 15.0) and turnovers/g (12.8 to 10.0).
• Through Feb. 16 games, the Terps are No. 7 in the NET rankings. The Terps are 12-4 against quad 1&2 opponents, with all four losses coming to quad 1 opponents. Maryland also ranks eighth according to KenPom, featuring the 5th-best defensive efficiency in the country.
• Maryland improved to 4-3 on the season when trailing with 5:00 to play after its dramatic rally against Michigan State (2/15). The Terps are 6-4 when trailing at halftime. Maryland is the first power-5 team since UCLA (04-05) to rally from deficits of at least 14 points in the second half in conference action.
• Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon (201-96; .677) became the fifth coach in program history to record 200 victories with the win against Nebraska. Only Lefty Driesell (285 games) reached the milestone faster in Maryland history. Turgeon's .660 winning pct. in Big Ten play ranks fourth among coaches with 50 wins over the last 40 years, trailing only Bo Ryan, Bob Knight and Tom Izzo.
• Anthony Cowan Jr. (1790) passed Keith Booth for ninth on Maryland's all-time scoring list with 24 points against Michigan State. He needs 18 points to pass Tom McMillen for 8th (see page 5 for full list). Cowan is also second all-time in free throws made (545) and fifth in assists (549). He has started all 124 games of his career, and is closing in on Keith Booth's record of 126 consecutive starts.
