COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The seventh-ranked Maryland men's lacrosse team will host a top-10 matchup in College Park this weekend when No. 5 Notre Dame comes Maryland Stadium on Saturday, February 29.
The Terps are back in action after an unexpected weekend off of competition after it's game against Navy on February 22 was canceled due to an outbreak of the Norovirus among the Navy men's lacrosse team.
Faceoff is slated for 1:00 pm, and the game will be broadcast on BTN+.
STORYLINES BY THE NUMBERS
2 – Maryland had to play two overtime periods to seal a victory at Richmond on February 8, the longest game for the Terps since defeating Johns Hopkins 8-7 in a triple overtime classic on April 28, 2018. The Terps are no stranger to overtime games, playing in five OT contests a season ago. The Terps are 5-2 in OT games since 2018.
3 – With three tallies against Penn, Freshman Daniel Maltz became the first Terp to score three extra man goals in the same game since Xander Ritz tallied three against Georgetown back on February 25, 2006. The Ashburn, Va. Native has been a catalyst on the man-up unit for the Terps, scoring four of Maryland's six EMO goals through four games.
4 – Maryland garnered all four Big Ten Player of the Week honors on February 18, becoming the first B1G program since 2017 to earn a clean sweep of the weekly conference honors. Jared Bernhardt was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Matt Rahill was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week, goalie Chris Brandau earned Specialist of the Week plaudits and Daniel Maltz rounded out the list as Freshman of the Week.
5 – Junior faceoff specialist Justin Shockey was clutch for the Terps at the X in the fourth quarter against No. 6 Penn, winning five of seven faceoffs to help fuel the Terrapin comeback effort. Shockey finished the day with 17 faceoff wins overall, tying his career-high for wins set against Villanova on March 17, 2018. Shockey's 35 faceoffs taken against the Quakers were a career-high and the second most taken in a single game by a Terrapin on record. Shockey's 35 were just three short of Andy Claxton's school-record 38 faceoff attempts against Towson in 1991.
6 – Maryland had to overcome a six-goal deficit to defeat sixth-ranked Penn on February 15, marking the second consecutive game the Terps overcame a 5+ goal deficit in the second half. Trailing 15-9 in the third quarter, the "Cardiac Terps" rattled off eight straight goals while holding the Quakers scoreless to grind out a 17-15 win.
8 – Jared Bernhardt moved into eighth in all-time goals at Maryland after a four-goal outing against Penn on February 15. The senior attackman now has 125 career goals, moving past Grant Catalino (119) and Scott Hochstadt (121) on the all-time list. Bernhardt is just the fourth Terp since the turn of the century to reach the top-10 in all-time goals, joining Matt Rambo (155), Joe Walters (153) and Connor Kelly (128).
13 – Saturday will be the 13th all-time meeting between the two schools since the series began in 1995. The programs are an even 6-6 head-to-head, and have played every season since 2016. Maryland came away victorious the last time the two programs met at Maryland Stadium, using a 10-point outing from Connor Kelly to seal a 12-10 win.
19 – Sophomore goalie Chris Brandau turned in his finest performance as a Terrapin against No. 6 Penn, making 19 saves to help Maryland secure the comeback win. 13 of his saves came in the second half, as he helped anchor Maryland's defense which held the Quakers scoreless for the final 22:58 of play.
