COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland Athletics will honor the 2004 ACC Championship men's basketball team on Sat., Feb. 29 when the ninth-ranked Terrapins host Michigan State in College Park.
The championship celebration will add further fanfare to what will be an unforgettable day at XFINITY Center, which will host ESPN College GameDay Saturday morning before the evening's 8 pm tipoff vs. Michigan State.
The '04 squad will forever be enshrined in Maryland basketball lore after engineering a Cinderella run at the 2004 ACC Tournament in Greensboro to capture the school's first ACC title in 20 years. The Terps won the tournament as the #6 seed, upsetting #3 seed Wake Forest, #2 seed NC State, and top seed Duke in succession on their way to the championship.
The Terps ended a five-year run for Duke at the ACC Tournament, beating the Blue Devils 95-87 in overtime for the program's first ACC title since 1984.
John Gilchrist was named the tournament's MVP, after hitting the game-winning free throw in a quarterfinal win over No. 15 Wake Forest, scoring a career-high 30 points in a semifinal win over North Carolina State and capped it with 26 points against Duke.
Former players from the 2004 team expected to be included in the anniversary celebration will be Will Bowers, Travis Garrison, John Gilchrist, Mike Grinnon, Darien Henry, Ekene Ibekwe, Mike Jones, Chris McCray and Jamar Smith.
In addition to Naismith Hall of Fame head coach Gary Williams, assistant coach Jimmy Patsos, assistant coach Matt Kovarik and director of operations Troy Wainwright from the '04 staff will also be back in College Park for the celebration.
