Terps Knock Off Third Ranked Foe On Road, 63-49, At #17 Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- For the first time in Maryland basketball program history the Terrapins have won three road games against ranked opponents as they downed #17 Minnesota, 63-49, at Williams Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Eric Ayala led the way for the Terps with 21 points as Maryland never trailed in the game.

Donta Scott added 15 points and 11 rebounds for his third-career double-double while Aaron Wiggins had eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Terps (9-7, 3-6 Big Ten) previously won at #6 Wisconsin, 70-64, on Dec. 28 and at #12 Illinois, 66-63, on Jan. 10 for their first two road wins against ranked teams this season.

Minnesota (11-5, 4-5), which came into the game a perfect 11-0 at home, was led by Marcus Carr, who had 25 points. Seven-footer Liam Robbins, who was last week's Big Ten Player of the Week, was held to just six points and two rebounds before he fouled out in just 22 minutes.

Maryland's defense was stout all game as their Terps limited Minnesota to a season-low 47 points and just 30.4 percent from the floor, including 5-of-23 from 3-point range.

The Terps held a 36-27 lead at halftime behind 14 first-half points from Ayala, who converted 6-of-7 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers over the first 20 minutes. The Terps' defense limited the Gophers to 38.1 percent from the floor and just 3-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first half.

Maryland raced out to a 17-3 lead in the game's first 7:41 as Ayala tallied eight points to give the Terps that 14-point advantage.

The Terps return to action on Wednesday night in a rescheduled game against #10 Wisconsin at 9 p.m. ET in College Park. That game will air on Big Ten Network and can be heard on the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
