EAST LANSING, MI -- No. 8 Maryland (11-5, 2-4 B1G) stifled down Michigan State, 4-0, Friday afternoon in East Lansing. The Terrapins controlled both ends of the field, holding the Spartans to just one shot for the match.
Margot Lawn opened the scoring just 80 seconds into the contest with a spinning play and fired it past the keeper. The Spartans (7-6, 0-6) couldn't muster much offense against the Terps stout midfield as
Anna Castaldo and
Kylee Niswonger shut the door on any threatening chances. The Terps pulled away after a second quarter goal from
Nathalie Fiechter, and two second-half goals from
Taylor Mason and
Maura Verleg.
Fiechter's goal came 2:00 into the second quarter as she deflected a shot in off a penalty corner. Just over 3:00 into the third quarter, Mason sent a rocket shot into the bottom of the cage off a pass from
Julianna Tornetta for Maryland's third goal. Less than two minutes later, Verleg scored her goal off a deflection on another penalty corner as well.
Missy Meharg's Take
"When you play defense really well in what we call the red zone, you can play defense everywhere. I also think
Noelle Frost and
Maura Verleg, I often call them the king and the queen on the chessboard. When the queen protects the king by a nature of defense, you're in a great place. I thought Maura did a fabulous job with that."
