UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- For the first time this season, the Maryland field hockey team was unable to get on the scoreboard, falling 3-0 at Penn State on Friday afternoon.
Despite getting seven of their nine shots on cage, The Terps (2-3) were unable to score on Nittany Lion goalkeeper Brie Barraco.
Juniors Taylor Mason and Bibi Donraadt led Maryland with two shots each, while senior goalkeeper Noelle Frost made six saves on the afternoon.
Penn State (2-2) got on the board in the first period when Anna Simon blasted a shot off a penalty corner that a diving Frost couldn't stop. The Nittany Lions took advantage of another penalty corner late in the third period when Sophia Gladieux took the initial pass to her left and fired a shot to the opposite corner to give PSU a 2-0 lead.
Penn State sealed the win early in the fourth period, taking advantage of a Maryland turnover which led to a fastbreak opportunity. Emma Spisak broke ahead of the field and took a long pass from Gladieux which provided a one-on-one chance against the keeper.
The Nittany Lions took 13 shots to Maryland's nine. Penn State held a narrow 5-4 edge in corner attempts.
The teams will meet again at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex on Sunday at noon. You can watch by clicking here or follow along with the live stats.
