Maryland Splits Doubleheader with Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Maryland softball team defeated Ohio State in its second game against the Buckeyes 8-2 on Saturday. The Terps came back from a 2-0 deficit by adding on six runs (including two homers) in the top of the sixth and one extra in the seventh to put them over the edge. The Buckeyes answered back in game two of the doubleheader 13-3 in five innings. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
 GAME 1  
  • Ohio State scored early in the bottom of the second and third to put the Buckeyes up 2-0 
  • Maryland responded with a homer from Haley Ellefson in the top of the fourth, her first for the Terps to make things 2-1
  • The top of the sixth was electric for the Terps, with six runs on three hits
    • Megan Mikami tripled to right center to bring Ellefson home and tie things up 2-2
    • After a stolen base from Campbell Kline, Trinity Schlotterbeck reached first on a fielding error to bring Mikami back around and load the bases 
    • Freshman Michaela Jones notched her first career homer and the second of the day for Maryland to clear the bases and put the Terps up 7-2 
  • Maryland added one more run to the board in the top of the seventh following a double by Ruby Butler to seal the deal
  • Pitcher Courtney Wyche pitched a complete game, recording five strikeouts and holding the Buckeys to only two earned runs 
GAME 2
  • Maryland got on the board early with a second homer of the day from Ellefson to send two runners home and put the Terps up 3-0 
  • Ohio State was quick to answer with three runs of their own to tie things up headed into the second 
  • The Buckeyes posted another 10 runs over three innings to end things for the Terps, 13-3
