COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's soccer team (0-3-1, 0-3-1 Big Ten) fell to Ohio State (2-0-1, 2-0-1 Big Ten), 3-1, at Ludwig Field Thursday afternoon.
The match was tied after 29 minutes after goals from Ohio State's Peyton McNamara and senior Sydney Staier, but Ohio State would finish two more chances to eventually finish off its win. McNamara's opening goal was a solo effort as the Buckeye freshman cut past a pair of Terp defenders and scored past Kennedy Tolson in the Maryland net in the seventh minute.
Staier's goal came in the 26th minute. After the Terps forced a giveaway in their final third, Zora Jackson got to the byline on the right wing and swung a cross into Staier, who finished nicely with her left foot. It was the first goal of the season for the Springfield, Va., native.
McNamara found her second goal in the 26th minute, a right footed effort that beat Tolson to her right. In the second half, the Buckeyes got on the front foot early and were rewarded off a corner in the 58th minute. Kine Flotre scored directly off the corner, tucking her cross just inside the far post.
Ohio State just surpassed the Terps in shots, holding a 13-11 advantage.
The Terrapins will return to action Sunday afternoon against Indiana. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., and the match will be streamed on Big Ten Network+.
