Terps Sweep Ohio State

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland baseball team came from behind to beat Ohio State 9-4 and sweep the weekend series on Sunday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium in College Park. Jason Savacool rebounded on the mound for the Terps, earning his fifth win of the season, while Maryland got homers from Benjamin Cowles, Maxwell Costes, and Bobby Zmarzlak in the Sunday contest.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland improves to 13-12 with the three-game sweep of Ohio State (13-12), and wins the season series against the Buckeyes four games to one.
  • The Terps climb to a tie for fifth place in the Big Ten standings with the win.
  • Maryland's offense was led by Chris Alleyne at the top of the order, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and three stolen bases. Alleyne now has a team-leading three games with three or more hits.
  • The baseball was flying out of the park today at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium, as Cowles, Costes, and Zmarzlak all went deep for the Terrapins. Cowles' homer was his team- and conference-leading 11th homer of the season, while Costes' was his first of the season.
  • Savacool bounced back with a quality outing on the mound, going six and a third innings allowing four runs and striking out a career-best six. The freshman right-hander settled in after allowing all four of his runs in the third inning, working through the fourth and fifth innings unscathed.
  • Maryland skipper Rob Vaughn handed the ball off to veteran sidewinder Elliot Zoellner, who turned in his best outing of the season with two and two thirds of rock-solid relief out of the bullpen. Zoellner faced nine batters, striking out six of them while allowing just a single hit and no runs.
  • The Buckeyes opened the scoring in the third after a hit batter and four consecutive hits turned into a four-run Ohio State lead.
  • Maryland got on the board in the bottom half of the third as Zmarzlak demolished the first pitch he saw well over the right field fence. Zmarzlak, who hadn't recorded a hit since March 29, flashed the power to put up the Terps' first run of the day.
  • The Terps rallied with two outs in the third as Costes took advantage of a RBI opportunity and clobbered a three-run shot that hit the Varsity Team House beyond the wall in left field. Costes - who homered four times in 15 games a season ago - records his first four-bagger of the season and now has 20 in his vaunted Maryland career.
  • Savacool settled in and worked quickly through the fourth, turning the ball over to the offense which put him in line for the win in the bottom half of the inning. After back-to-back walks and a Keister sacrifice bunt, Alleyne doubled home both Gardiner and Zmarzlak to give the Terps a 6-4 lead which they wouldn't relinquish.
  • Maryland widened the margin in the sixth, as Alleyne singled, stole both second and third, and came home on a wild pitch. After Matt Shaw worked a one-out walk, Cowles launched a two-run bomb to give the Terps a 9-4 lead.
  • Savacool came back out for the seventh and induced a leadoff flyout, but surrendered a double to the next batter which marked the end of his afternoon on the mound. Zoellner stepped onto the mound with a runner in scoring position and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.
  • The Terrapins went down quietly in the seventh and eighth, as Ohio State reliever Isaiah Coupet retired all six batters he faced. Zoellner was just as efficient for Maryland, as the fifth-year senior retired the side in order in the eighth and faced just one batter over the minimum in the ninth to secure the win for Maryland.
Up Next
  • Maryland competes in its last "pod" weekend of play in the 2021 season, as the Terps travel to Iowa City, Iowa to play two against the Hawkeyes and two against Northwestern next weekend. Friday night's matchup vs. Iowa will be Maryand's first televised contest of the season, airing at 5:00 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network. The Terps have already faced off against both teams, going 0-2 against Iowa and 2-0 against Northwestern so far in the season series.
